Fit Girl of the Week: Sabrina Gunnels
Today I’d like to present you a fur mom! Sabrina is a talented hair stylist and a national educator. She recently opened her own studio Hair by Sabrina Gunnnels. When not in salon helping ladies of Tuscon feel beautiful, Sabrina travels to conferences and teaches the art of hair styling. She is passionate about educating other professionals in her industry and sharing her experience.
Aside from her amazing career, Sabrina has another success story to share. With home-based fitness workouts and a diet overhaul, she achieved an incredible transformation! All while working full time 10-12 hour shifts! Sabrina followed her workout schedule and eating plan with an amazing discipline and determination . And the results came!! She dropped from size 12 to 6 and created healthy lifelong habits. Read how she did it below.
I have always been curvy and have fluctuated weight since high school, I would gain and lose the same 10-15 pounds every year it seems but I could never find a “balance”. I just assumed since I preferred organic food that I was “healthy”. After moving to a new state and starting over I found myself becoming depressed, negative, insecure; and couldn’t put my finger on “why”?’
I had made an appointment to talk to a Dr. about antidepressants; then I got asked if I would ever consider joining a health challenge group? I decided to give it a try because I hated my body and that’s when my life changed. I discovered I was an “emotional eater”, which is why I could never maintain my weight. I also discovered that you can over eat on “healthy” food, as well as regular exercise is a natural way to relieve stress and depression. After starting the 21 Day Fix Program I knew in the first week that my life was about to change for the better and that it was up to me to take control over my health, it was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.
My daily routine consist of waking up at 6-6:30 am and doing a 30 minute workout program. If i wake up late by chance I still try to fit in a 10min workout routine… 10 minute abs is my favorite. I get ready for my day at 7 am and eat breakfast while I do my makeup (usually Oatmeal or a English muffin with peanut-butter).
I make Shakelology and drink it on my way to work (my favorite is Chocolate Vegan with unsweetened vanilla almond milk, water, ice and unsweetened coconut flakes) and I prefer it in the morning because it gives me more energy for the day.
I always pack my lunch and snacks, it saves me so much money, time and it’s convenient for me. I am a hairstylist and usually work 10+ hour days and I like easy snacks that I can eat quickly but still have energy and not be weighed down by heavy foods. For lunch my go to’s are: Love Crunch Coconut Macaroon Granola, Greek Yogurt, and fresh berries. I also love Grilled Chicken Caesar Salads and Creamy Swiss cheese, cucumber and turkey pinwheels.
Snacks usually include Granny Smith Apples and Peanut Butter, Grapes, Carrots with Hummus, Cucumber slices with Lime juice and sea salt.
For Dinner I switch it up a lot, but my go to’s are: Steak with Roasted Veggies (Cauliflower and Mushrooms are my favorite) and grilled seasoned chicken with grilled veggies (Yellow Squash and Zucchini are delicious). My favorite go to sweets: Chocolate Shakeology Peanut butter bars, Chocolate Shakeology & Coconut brownies.
These are just a few of my favorite meals to help with my crazy schedule. I am in the salon Tuesday through Saturday and on Monday’s I travel to other salons and teach. So I always like packing easy things to eat in between my classes on the road. How do I have time for all of this? Meal Prepping!!
I make a meal plan every Saturday afternoon of what I want to eat for the week. On Sundays I go shopping and get what I need and prep my meals for 3-4 days at a time. This helps the meals stay fresh and I don’t get bored eating the same thing all week. So for me I prep on Sundays and Wednesdays, I can prep in 30-45mins and it saves me hours throughout the week to have time to do the things I enjoy.
I love my new lifestyle! Having a routine has really helped me stay on track with my health, and having a balanced lifestyle makes everything more fun and less stressful. I’m good all week and on the weekend I take a rest day and a cheat-meal(s). This allows me to enjoy the not so healthy foods but not lose my progress of maintaining a healthy weight. I’m happier and in the best shape I’ve ever been in, all because I said “Yes” to a challenge.
