Hello friends! Now that the Spring break is just around the corner (how did it happen so fast?), many of you are thinking of weekend getaways and family vacations. So I thought this would be a good time to share our experience at Springhill Suites Springdale near Zion National Park, UT just a few months back.
I highly recommend to make a family trip to Zion at some point of your life. The only way to describe it is MAGNIFICENT. It’s #4 on the National Geographic’s list of most popular National Parks in the U.S. but to me Zion beats them all. What is so unique about Zion is that it places you at the bottom of the canyon created by the Virgin River. You end up looking from the bottom up at the striking vertical cliffs, while Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon have you looking down.
There are plenty of hiking and camping opportunities for all levels, including kids and handicapped. Each year Zion gets more crowded as more people fall in love with its beauty. March through October is the busiest season, so plan your trip accordingly. Many hotels get booked months in advance and reservations at restaurants are recommended.
During our last visit we stayed at Springhill Suites, and we couldn’t have been happier with the choice.
The hotel is centrally located within a few minute walk to restaurants, souvenir shops and a bus stop. One of the nights we were too tired to go out to eat, so the husband walked over and picked us food from a bar across the parking lot. It was a traditional bar food (the kids had burgers) but their Caesar’s salad and french fries were to die for. Another night we walked over to the pizza shop. We took advantage of their patio, so the kids could play while we waited for our order.
We also appreciated the close proximity of our hotel to the park entrance. It takes about 5 minutes to reach the park ranger gate from Springhill Suites parking lot. This really matters the most when you have to wake up early to beat the crowds to the Park public parking lot ( we were told we should aim to be there by 8 AM).
We really enjoyed the modern rustic vibe of the resort. It seemed to fit in perfectly with the relaxed atmosphere of Springdale.
The reception area is airy and spacious with a clean beautiful design. It’s a nice place to get together with friends for a cup of coffee.
One of my favorite features is a lovely patio located behind the reception with a fireplace overlooking the mountains.
It’s a perfect place to get together with friends or simply gaze into the nature. The space is also available during breakfast time, and many hikers fuel up on coffee and eggs here before a long day.
From the patio you could follow the trail in either direction. One of them will lead you to a lovely lake surrounded by luscious greenery. Make sure to request a suite overlooking the lake.
(See that top balcony on the picture above? That was our suite overlooking the lake!)
There’s plenty to do with the kids on property. We enjoyed exploring the area, checking out the bridge, chasing each other and playing ball on the glass.
As a cherry on top, there is a huge pool with gradual descent for smaller kids and a hot tub right next to it. While we weren’t brave enough to get in the water (it was still cold out), others did. The hot tub was also popular in the afternoon.
When traveling with the fam, we usually end up getting a suite so that the kids can sleep in a separate room (they seem to settle down quicker that way and we adults get more privacy). Our suite at Springhill Suites was just perfect for that! There was a long hallway separating the bedroom from the living room.
Maria immediately made herself comfortable and tested out the equipment 🙂
Our room was spotless and the beds were comfortable. We requested extra sheets and a blanket and those were delivered to us within minutes. The view from our room was absolutely stunning. Even my little one spent time just taking it all in.
The ultimate treat was a nice balcony with 2 lounge chairs overlooking the lake and the red cliffs. I wanted to stay here forever.
The room is fully equipped with a fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker, along with glasses and plastic utensils. When you travel with kids these are the essentials in my book. I like to stock the fridge with milk, juice, yogurt packs, string cheese etc for late night snacks. It’s also useful if you bring leftovers after a dinner in a restaurant (I always do haha). Also, can we say a hallelujah for a full size Keurig coffee maker in the room? Along with a nice Keurig coffee pod selection? Helps you look forward to an early morning!
A walk in closet deserves a special mention. This was admittedly the biggest closet I’ve seen in a hotel. I immediately felt the urge to unpack everything and made it home. Each of us got ended up getting their own shelf with clothes lined up for the next morning, which made the logistics of getting ready for a hike with kids in the morning waaaay smoother.
The bathroom in our suite was huge and I was excited to find Paul Mitchel hair products and other cute brand name toiletries.
This drink station is one of the reason why I will return to this hotel. At any point of day and night we could walk into the reception and fix ourselves a drink. The coffee is quite good, and in the evening I tried their green tea selection, while kids enjoyed hot chocolate.
Springhill features an expanded version of a breakfast buffet in the morning, which is included with your stay. Here you can add spinach to your eggs and top it with salsa and cheddar.
Waffle makers, toasts, bagels, oatmeal, fresh fruit and yogurt… there was something for everyone. All the food looked fresh and appealing. We really enjoyed our breakfast here.
In addition to a daily breakfast, the hotel treats you to freshly baked cookies in the afternoon. As you can imagine, those were a huge hit with the kids and adults alike.
You will never run out of things to do at Springhill Suites because they also have a playroom! There is a giant wooden set of jenga blocks and a pool table. It’s available on a first come first serve basis, and we never had a problem getting a turn in the early afternoon.
This fireplace was so pretty at sunrise and sunset and a popular gathering place for many visitors.
Another impressive feature was a fully stocked gym inside the hotel. It was clean and spacious, with all the essentials for a quality lift session or cardio. You could get your sweat on with a lovely pool and mountains view out the window.
I also appreciated a daily newspaper and helpful information about local programs on a display inside the lobby.
And a candy dish… a.k.a the reason why my kids would want to be back 🙂
We made sure to grab a few Chupa Chups for the road when it was time to go.
When browsing Internet, it may be hard to figure out how well hotel will work for your needs. With Springhill Suites we hit a jackpot. Everything from comfortable clean rooms to an amazing breakfast and a perfect location near restaurants was spot on. This hotel will be our destination in Zion and we can’t wait to come back soon!
